Installation

Translay is a desktop app for Windows. The installer ships what never changes (the app, Python, ffmpeg, Node.js and uv); the first time you open it, the app itself installs the server and the voice engine and leaves you ready to translate. There is no need to open a terminal or install anything by hand.

System 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.
GPU NVIDIA. With 4 GB or more, cloned Spanish voice; with less or no GPU, subtitles only. Translay chooses automatically based on your machine (see Performance).
Disk About 15 GB: 7.5 GB for the server and the voice engine, 6 GB for models, plus whatever your videos take up.
Internet The first time, to download packages and models; afterward, only for YouTube.

You don’t need to be an administrator: it installs for your user.

  1. Download Translay_<version>_x64-setup.exe from the latest release on Releases and open it.

  2. Open Translay from the Start menu. The Preparar Translay (Set up Translay) screen shows your GPU, whether you will get Spanish voice or subtitles only, and where your library is stored (by default Videos\Translay; Cambiar… (Change…) lets you pick another folder, for example on another disk).

  3. Click Instalar (Install). The button shows progress (Instalando 42 %, “Installing 42%”) and, below it, how much of the download is done. It takes as long as your connection needs: about 4 GB compressed.

  4. When it finishes, Abriendo Translay (Opening Translay) appears while the models load. The first time they are downloaded from Hugging Face (Whisper large-v3-turbo, Opus-MT, OmniVoice and WeSpeaker, about 6 GB) and you see their percentage. After that it starts in seconds.

That’s it: continue with Your first video.

Python packages are pinned to their exact version and SHA-256 hash (desktop/locks/), and the tools bundled in the installer are verified when it is built (desktop/tools.json). The voice engine is an exact copy of the environment that was measured in the labs.

Install the new version over the old one. When you open the app, if the Python packages changed, it updates them by itself (with the same progress button); otherwise it opens straight away. Your library is not touched.

From Windows Configuración › Aplicaciones (Settings › Apps). If you check the box to delete the app’s data, the environments and logs (dev.alejandro.translay) are deleted too. Your library stays in its folder; delete it by hand if you no longer want it.
